This session explores how coherent lesson design can strengthen mathematical understanding, particularly for learners with SEND. Examine how carefully sequenced tasks, consistent representations and explicit links between prior and new learning can help learners to make mathematical connections and gain a deeper conceptual understanding.

Meet your trainer

Helen Temple

Helen currently teaches maths in Key Stage 5 at Park Community Academy Blackpool, whilst also working independently as a maths consultant. Helen also works as a Local Leader of Mathematics Education (LLME) with Abacus NW Maths Hub, where she has undertaken the role of Work Group Lead for numerous Research and Innovation Work Groups (RIWG), Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) for Secondary Teaching Assistants and, more recently, Regional Co-Lead (RCL) for the North West special schools Teaching for Mastery community. Away from work, Helen enjoys long distance running or, at a more leisurely pace, swimming and family days out.
