The Big Future Survey- engaging young people in shaping education and society

The aim of the survey is ambitious, to hear from up to one million children about their lives, priorities and aspirations, particularly as more young people approach voting age. The survey explores what it is like to grow up in England today, including children’s concerns, their experiences in their communities, and their ideas about what a “good childhood” should look like now and in the future. Responses will be used to inform discussions with government and influence decisions that affect children’s lives, making participation meaningful and impactful.

A wide range of supporting resources has been developed to help schools, colleges and youth settings deliver the survey effectively. These include:

  • Teacher guides and lesson-ready slide decks for both primary and secondary pupils
  • A stakeholder toolkit and promotional materials, such as flyers and social media materials
  • Activities (e.g. postcard and placard tasks) to support engagement in different formats
  • Guidance for supporting pupils with SEND including tailored advice on accessibility
  • Practical tips on introducing the survey and helping children respond thoughtfully

There are also adult guidance materials for those completing the survey on behalf of children, ensuring inclusion for younger pupils or those requiring additional support.

By using these resources, it is hoped that adults can facilitate meaningful conversations, support inclusive participation, and empower children to share their perspectives confidently while helping to shape policy and practice for the future.
